  • About Me

I am currently FRQSC Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC, Canada where I am working on a project entitled "The Vancouver Soundscape on Film." My ongoing research explores the intersections between audiovisual media, sound studies, and urbanism. My writing has been published in a variety of journals and anthologies and has been translated into French, German, Italian and Spanish. My research and creative work has been presented at conferences and festivals internationally. See bio for more details.
  • Spring 2013

I am just wrapping up my first year of postdoctoral research in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver. There I've been immersed in the archives of the World Soundscape Project investigating how their studies of the sonic environment of Vancouver can inform research into sound practices in locally-based audiovisual media production. As part of this research I've been mapping the positions of WSP sound recordists over the the last 40 years and have been making new recordings of my own in the False Creek area for inclusion in the archive. Over the past year I have presented early findings at a variety of conferences and I have organized panels for this year's meetings of SCMS, FSAC and CCA. I'll also be presenting a paper at MaMI in New York. My essay on "reflective audioviewing" in Gus Van Sant's Elephant was published in the December issue of Organised Sound; I have four entries in the Vancouver volume of the World Film Locations book series published in March; and I am writing a book manuscript entitled, Reflective Audioviewing: An Acoustic Ecology of the Cinema. And in my "spare time" I'll be completing the sound design for a short experimental film on water by Gerda Cammaer, and working on a soundscape composition profiling the acoustic environment of Vancouver's Burrard Bridge.
